May 11: Moms, Poll, Sun (!), Stars, Jummy

An early Mother's Day celebration, a bright thing in the sky, and the North Central Chamber's upcoming annual dinner are among your 5 Things To Know Today.

Moms: Looking for a nice way to celebrate Mother's Day a bit early? The is hosting a special lunch starting at 11 am. Suggested donation is $3, which includes lunch, raffles, and prizes. Call ahead for reservations: (401) 944-3343.

Poll: We're down to the final couple of hours in this week's Readers' Choice poll on the best place for a "stay-cation." Cast you vote before the poll closes at 9 am, and watch for the results at noon.

Sun: It's time — finally — to break out the sunglasses today, with highs in the 60s and clear skies during the day, as per the JohnstonPatch WeatherBug forecast. Some clouds overnight, then sunny over the weekend.

Stars: There's still time to get your tickets for the "Night of the Rising Stars" annual dinner, to be held May 21 starting with cocktails and a mini-expo at 5 pm. Prices start at $50 per person. Call the Chamber at (401) 349-4674 for more info.

Jummy: On this date last year, we profiled "Whiz Kid" Jummy Olagundoye, then a senior at Johnston High School, who'd just started Jam2Fit. [That's her photo attached to the article.] This year, Jummy is among the competitors in the Miss RI Scholarship Pageant, scheduled for May 26 at Rhode Island College.
