JHS Students Get Star Treatment

Members of the Johnston High School Academic Decathlon teams attended both the town council and school committee meetings this week to be recognized for their achievements.

Following their success at the Mar. 11 statewide Academic Decathlon competition, members of the teams were recognized this week at both the town council and school committee meetings.

The Johnston Insider reported that the students' results included first place in the Super Quiz and second and fourth place overall in the challenging competition.

On Monday night, with Gov. Lincoln Chafee in attendance, Town Council President Robert V. Russo read a council resolution "commemorating this distinguished and historic achievement," honoring the students and their advisors, Jean Picano and Greg Russo.

After councilors approved the measure 5-0, the near-capacity crowd gathered at the gave a hearty ovation, and Chafee took time to shake hands with each of the students in the group.

Then, on Tuesday night at , members of the school committee handed out certificates to the students in their respective voting wards, and paused the meeting while students posed for a group photo.

The 2012 Academic Decathlon students are:

Team One, Second Place Overall: Victoria Antonucci; Brendan Chadwick; Zulmy Cortez; Lindsay Lemoi; Joshua Oliveira; Molly Rajsombath; Vanessa Sullivan; Gary Swider; and Yvette Zeng.

Team Two, Fourth Place Overall: Matthew Couchaine; Arianna Pacheco; Kalyn Ricciut; Julia Simoneau; Ian Tvenstrup; Elyse Varone; Alyssa Zanella; and Jason Zheng.

Alternates: MacKenzie Carroll and Amenah Khalil.

Individual Awards, as reported by the Johnston Sun Rise, were:

Victoria Antonucci: silver in the Super Quiz; silver for economics.

Brendan Chadwick: gold for overall top score; gold for math; gold for top score in the Super Quiz; gold for music; gold for language and literature; silver for economics; silver for science; silver for art.

Zulmy Coretz: silver for language and literature; gold for art.

Joshua Oliviera: gold for music; silver for economics; silver for speech; bronze in overall top score.

Molly Rajsombath: gold for top score in the Super Quiz; gold for language and literature' silver for economics; silver for art; silver in overall top score.

Vanessa Sullivan: silver for top score in the Super Quiz; silver for language and literature; bronze for economics; bronze for art.

Julia Simoneau: silver for language and literature; bronze for art.
