JHS Sports: Panthers Edged, 5-4; Softball Continues Today

The Johnston High School varsity baseball squad scored three runs in the fifth on Apr. 9, but Ponaganset won the game with a late RBI.

In a game where wind gusts kicked up clouds of sand at on Apr. 9, the Ponaganset Chieftains scored on a late run to beat the Panthers, 5-4.

The Providence Journal reported that Ponaganset's Richard Petrella provided a two-out single in the top of the sixth that gave the Division II-North squad the edge over Johnston.

Johnston yielded four runs in the first inning, and the Panthers battled back in the fifth with Steve Perfetto and James Picchi contributing RBIs to bring the game even.

The Panthers now share second place in D-II North with three other teams, including Ponaganset.

Johnston is next scheduled to host North Smithfield on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Park beginning at 3:30 pm.

Lady Panthers travel today:

The JHS varisty softball team is set to return to action this afternoon at 3:30 pm on the road at Exeter-West Greenwich.

It will be Johnston's second game of the season, a week after they lost, 12-2, to East Greenwich at home. The Lady Panthers then travel to Tiverton on Apr. 19.
