HS Sports: Cougars Cruise; More Wins For B-Ball

The Johnston-North Providence hockey team notches an 11th victory, while the boys basketball squad tightens its hold on first place and the Lady Panthers take their sixth straight win.

No, this isn't a repeat — the varsity winter sports teams all earned victories this past week, with the Johnston-North Providence Cougars hockey squad drilling Scituate, 7-1, on Jan. 28, and the Panther basketball teams each securing victories.

Also this week, the Johnston Sun Rise reported that the Johnston High School wrestling team secured fourth place in the Warwick Veterans High School tournament on Jan. 21.

Coleen Langevin Fournier reported that Nick Fournier (16 points for the season) netted two scores for the Cougars, while Robert Tonucci (8) and MacKenzie Olink (22) each tacked on three assists in the winning effort Sunday night.

The win maintains the Cougars' hold on first place in Division III with five games to go in the season. Senior goalie Matt Domaingue holds a 0.77 goals-against average, allowing only 8 goals over 11 games.

Next up for the co-op team is East Providence on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Smithfield Ice Rink.

Playoff Possibilities For Panthers

Paul Burrows led the boys' varsity basketball team with 16 points — including four three-pointers — and Ryan Anderson tacked on 10 more en route to a 56-47 victory over Scituate on Jan. 30.

The Panthers' victory improved their divisional record to 6-3 (10-6 overall) and strengthened their hold on first place in Division III North, with a two-game lead over second-place North Smithfield.

Exeter-West Greenwich is scheduled to visit JHS tonight for a 7 p.m. match-up.

Also improving their record — and chances for a playoff berth — were the Lady Panthers, who trounced Mt. Pleasant, 59-20, on Jan. 23, the Johnston Sun Rise reported.

The girls' squad followed that victory up with a win over Classical, 51-40, on Jan. 25, and a 58-35 victory hosting Hope High School on Jan. 27.

Following the six-game win streak, the Lady Panthers brought their record to 8-3 and gave themselves a shot at the postseason.

Johnston travels to The Prout School for a non-league game scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.
