Great Escape: Holiday Classics, Penguins, And Lots Of Vampires And Werewolves

Lots of great family-friendly productions to check out this weekend, along with some big movie releases.

Two Holiday Classic Shows Begin this Week:

  • Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical starts this week at the Providence Performing Arts Center and runs until Nov. 20. Kids’ Night special pricing has been extended to the 5 p.m. performance on Friday, Nov. 18. For all performance times and ticket prices visit: PPAC.
  • Trinity Rep’s 35th Annual Production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol opens on Friday, Nov. 18 and runs until Dec. 30, so there is plenty of time to catch a performance of this classic. And, the first performance on Nov. 18 is a Pay-What-You-Can (PWYC) performance. Tickets are first-come, first-serve, and are sold at the box office starting at 6:30 p.m., one hour before showtime. Some Children’s Classics Brought to Life:

  • Bishop Hendricken High School will be performing two children’s classics this weekend, Alice in Wonderland and James and the Giant Peach. The school will run three performance throughout the weekend beginning on Nov. 18. Ticket are $10 or $12. For more information visit: Hendricken.
  • The Artist Exchange in Cranston will also be performing Alice in Wonderland this weekend. There will be two performances on Sat. Nov. 19.  One at 12:30 p.m. and a second at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are free for children age 2 and younger. For more about this performance and ticket information visit: www.artists-exchange.org.

  • Get ready Twilight fans. The long awaited release of the fourth movie in The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn - Part 1, hits theaters this weekend on Nov. 18. There's a wedding, a honeymoon and the birth of a baby in this one. Plus, lots of vampires and werewolves.  
  • And get ready for more "Happy Feet." Happy Feet Two also opens this weekend on Nov. 18. The movie brings back Mumble, the master of tap, and his adventures with his son Erik. The cast includes the voices of Elijah Wood, Pink, Robin Williams, Sofia Vergara, Brad Pitt and more.

Get Out and Enjoy the Fall Weather. 

  • The Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy is holding its Annual Fall Walk on Neutaconkanut Hill in Providence Saturday, Nov. 19 from 12:30 until 4 p.m. There will be two guided trail walks. A vigorous, longer walk for the exercise conscious from 12:30 -2 p.m. and a gentler, shorter walk from 1-2 p.m. There will also be hot air balloon rides courtesy of ReMax from 2-4 p.m. Donations suggested.   • Take a trip to Italy on Sat. Nov. 19 with the RI Philharmonic at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Auditiorium. The Philharmonic and its Music Director Larry Rachleff will present Viva Italia, an all-orchestral program featuring "Rossini’s La gazza ladra: Overture, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (Italian), Dallapiccola’s Musica Notturno and Respighi’s Pines of Rome."   • If you rather stay local, Bar 101 on Atwood Avenue and Ball’s Sports Bar and Grille on both have music on tap for the weekend. On Nov. 19 Bar 101 will feature live acoustics with The Cairos starting around 8 p.m. Ball’s Sports Bar and Grille will showcase WitzEnd on Nov. 18 and SpeakEasy on Nov. 19. Both shows begin at 9:30 p.m.
