Autism Project Accepting Registration For 9-Week Training Series

The Autism Project, headquartered in Johnston, RI,  is currently enrolling parents, educators, and related professionals in “A Starting Point,” an introductory level autism training series.

Classes will meet on Mondays at the organization’s Johnston office, 1516 Atwood Ave., from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. beginning September 26th.  The nine-week program  will run through December 5, 2011.

The program provides a solid foundation of the core deficits and challenges of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), theories of practice, and strategies that participants can implement immediately.

Experts emphasize that education of parents and educators is a crucial component of treatment plans.  Along with offering a deeper understanding of the disorder and available treatments, "A Starting Point" offers the opportunity to practice techniques and create materials that can be used to support individuals at home, in the community, and in school settings immediately.

The cost for the series is $299 for professionals.  (Eighteen continuing education credit hours are available for teachers and social workers.)  A discounted participation fee of $75 is available to all family members of individuals on the spectrum to ensure that they have access to the information they need to effectively support their loved ones. Rhode Island Medical Assistance (Katie Beckett) often funds parent participation in "A Starting Point" as well.
