Today is Columbus Day, a holiday that commemorates Christopher Columbus's landing in the "New World" (by European standards, anyway) on Oct. 12, 1492. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1937, and in 1971, it was set to the second Monday of every October.

In Johnston, town hall and government buildings (except the police and fire departments), along with local schools, are closed. Trash and recycling collection are delayed one day.
