Week in Review: Baseball, Court, Hummel, Pursuit, Crash, Savings

Opening Day for Johnston Little League, a big name in local journalism, and a return to court for Donald Greenslit are among the top headlines for the week ending Apr. 20.

Baseball: We kicked off the week with a video look-back at Johnston Little League Opening Day, held Apr. 14 and attended by several hundred eager baseball players. Click for the parade, stay for the "Star Spangled Banner" performance by Alycia Bedrosian.

Court: Donald K. Greenslit, 52, appeared in Providence Superior Court on Tuesday at his formal arraignment on several felony charges stemming from his arrest on Jan. 22 by Johnston Police. Greenslit stands accused of killing his girlfriend, Stacie Dorego, in their Johnston home and trying to burn her remains. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for May 29.

Hummel: Anyone who's been around local journalism (or read the old Phillipe and Jorge column in the Providence Phoenix over the past 20 years) may remember the story of Jim Hummel and how he earned the nickname "Opie." The current chief of The Hummel Report (a 2011 AP award winner, to boot) is the scheduled guest speaker at the North Central Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner on May 21.

Pursuit: reported this week that they arrested a North Providence man for the second time in two weeks on charges of trying to ram his car into a police cruiser.

Crash: Following a car accident in Smithfield, a Woonsocket woman faces a charge of failure to report a death to authorities when State Police officers learned she was driving the car of a Johnston man who she said had died earlier that day.

Saving: On Friday, Mayor Joseph Polisena gathered with local officials and members of the media to announce the official completion of two projects that he said will save the town more than $100,000 per year — the new boilers and hot water heaters at Johnston High School, and the new 8,000-gal. gasoline tank at the Johnston Police Department.
