Town Extends Tax Bill Deadlines

Property tax bills are due August 24, and senior citizens have until Sept. 5 to pay.

The property tax bills that are going out this week will be due at on August 24, instead of the original deadline of July 24.

A delay in releasing the tax bills for fiscal 2012, which began July 1, was the cause of the adjusted deadline, according to Janet Whiteley, Mayor Joseph M. Polisena's adminstrative assistant.

"The mayor extended the grace period for payments to accomodate the delay," Whiteley explained. "We don't want people to think that they're getting a tax bill on the 20th and have to pay by the 24th of this month."

Senior citizens who own their homes — an estimated 2,200 taxpayers — will have an even later deadline, Sept. 5, to allow time for federal payments to reach those homeowners, she added.

Chief of Staff Doug Jeffrey, in a separate phone interview, said the delay stemmed from the schedule of the town council's vote to set the tax levy, which was held July 18. The council for fiscal 2012 on June 23.
