Town Council Meeting — Sept. 12

A zone change request for a proposed assisted living facility is among the items on tonight's agenda.

A zoning change request by the owners of Briarcliffe Manor, on Old Pocasset Road, is scheduled to go before the Johnston Town Council at its meeting tonight starting at 7 p.m.

A copy of tonight's agenda is attached to this article.

The request — which would change the zoning on property owned by Briarcliffe from its current R-40 (residential) designation to Planned District/Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) — was originally scheduled for the council's meeting on Aug. 9.

Councilors did not hear the request at that time because they had not yet received an advisory opinion from the town's planning board, according to Town Solicitor William Conley.

During the planning board meeting on Aug. 2, members voted 5-2 to recommend that the council approve the zone change, which would allow Briarcliffe to build a new two-story, 60,000-sq.ft. facility on about 16 acres of land. The proposed facility would have 73 rooms and up to 100 beds.

Residents who live near the nursing home have posted comments on JohnstonPatch opposing the plan, saying that the proposed assisted living facility would not fit with the residential nature of the surrounding area.
