Town Council Meeting — August 9

A zoning change requested by the owners of Briarcliffe Manor is among the items on tonight's agenda.

The town council is scheduled to hear a zoning change request by the owners of Briarcliffe Manor on Old Pocasset Road at tonight's meeting, scheduled to 7 p.m. at the Municipal Court.

Last week, the town's planning board gave preliminary approval to a proposal by Briarcliffe for a new two-story assisted living facility, and voted 5-2 to support the zone change that the council is scheduled to consider tonight.

Residents who live near the nursing home have protested the move, saying it would not fit with the residential nature of the surrounding area. Several of the neighbors posted comments on JohnstonPatch opposing the plan.

Also on the agenda is a change to the town's car rental and sales ordinance that would double the number of new car sales licenses allowed by the town, from the current five to 10.
