Strong, Damaging Winds Expected Today, Tomorrow Morning

A high wind watch is in effect for Rhode Island, including Johnston, into Wednesday.

 

Strong winds and the potential for heavy rain may make for a tricky afternoon commute today.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a high wind advisory Monday afternoon, with possibly damaging winds expected for late today into early tomorrow morning throughout Rhode Island, including Johnston.

As a result, a high wind watch is in effect through Wednesday.

Today's forecast in Johnston also includes a 70-percent chance of rain during the day, increasing to 90 percent overnight with the potential for locally heavy rainfall.

South wind gusts could reach 55 mph, according to NWS, with the strongest gusts occurring near the south coast and higher elevations. 

The winds could result in downed tree limbs and possibly downed trees, according to the NWS. Take precautions and make sure you secure any outdoor lawn furniture.
