Still Time To Find Locally Grown Produce

Farmer's markets are winding down for the season, but there are still opportunities to find local fruits and vegetables.

The Rhode Island Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Management issued a release on Oct. 7 reminding Rhode Islanders of the benefits of locally-grown foods sold at farmers’ markets throughout the state, including this year's market held at Johnston Memorial Park, which wraps up on Oct. 24.

While the farmers’ market season is winding down for some vendors, there are still a number of markets selling local produce, the departments stated in the joint press release.

“Farmers’ markets promote sustainable local agriculture by supporting our farmers and providing healthy and delicious produce for Rhode Islanders to enjoy,” said DEM Director Janet Coit in the press release. “Locally-grown corn, apples, pumpkins, squash, and potatoes are just some of the healthy food products produced at Rhode Island farms and currently in peak supply at farmers’ markets and roadside stands across the state.”
