School Committee Meeting — Nov. 15

An update on the work to replace the aging boilers at Johnston High School is on tonight's school committee agenda.

At a special joint session of the town council and school board on Oct. 21, each panel approved contracts for replacement of the two aging boilers and removal of asbestos insulation and an oil tank.

During its budget hearings in the spring, the school committee considered replacing just the burners and switching from oil to gas to fuel the boilers, which are original to Johnston High School.

In June, the town council approved spending $500,000 in bond proceeds to replace the entire heating and hot water system at JHS, as well as switching to less-expensive natural gas.

According to the contract approved by the council and school board, the town is using $195,000 in federal grant money and incentives paid by National Grid to defray the overall cost of the project, which is estimated at $667,000.
