Reed, Whitehouse Hosting Service Academy Day Saturday

If you have a high school junior interested in serving the country, an info session is being held Saturday at CCRI.

This morning, Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse are scheduled to host a U.S. Military Service Academy Day for high school students from schools across the state.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick.

This informational seminar is open to all high school students and their parents who are interested in learning about the requirements and procedures for seeking a Congressional nomination and obtaining an appointment to one of the United States Service Academies.

However, the program is specifically geared for students currently enrolled in their junior year of high school.

“I am always pleased to host this annual event to familiarize Rhode Island students with the application and nomination process for applying to our nation’s five service academies.  These institutions are world-class learning centers that instill the values of hard work, leadership, and duty to young men and women, and I encourage all interested students and their parents to attend,” Reed, who graduated from West Point in 1971, said.

“Our nation's service academies allow students to obtain a great education while serving our country,” Whitehouse said. “It’s my honor each year to host Service Academy Day with Senator Reed to provide Rhode Island students with a chance to learn more about these exceptional institutions. I encourage all interested students and their families to attend.”

Representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marine, Coast Guard academies, along with ROTC spokesmen from Providence College and the University of Rhode Island, will be on hand to answer questions and distribute information about their respective programs.

In addition, Senators Reed and Whitehouse will discuss procedures for seeking a Congressional nomination from each of their respective offices.

Students wishing to attend service academies must meet high academic and physical standards.  Applicants must be legal Rhode Island residents and United States citizens, at least 17 years of age, with no children or other legal dependents.

Students attending the service academies are on active duty starting the day they enter an academy.

For those interested in attending a Service Academy starting in the 2014-2015 academic year, the application deadline for a nomination is Nov. 1, 2013.
