Polisena to Issue Stop Order to Broadrock

Mayor Joseph Polisena has scheduled a noontime press conference on Tuesday to announce a cease-and-desist order against the company.

Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena is scheduled to hold a press conference at noon on Tuesday to announce a cease-and-desist order against Broadrock Renewables LLC for continued odor problems.

In an email sent Tuesday morning, Polisena said he plans to issue the order "shutting down [Broadrock's] operations until further notice due to ongoing odor complaints received from residents, as well as health and safety concerns."

Polisena filed suit against Broadrock and the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation in December, 2011, after numerous reports and complaints of odors coming from the Central Landfill.

That lawsuit remains pending.

In the time since, RIRRC has taken steps to monitor and address potential smell problems in response to laws passed by the state General Assembly.

Polisena has frequently criticized Broadrock and RIRRC for "pointing the finger at each other."

Tuesday's press conference will be held at the Johnston Municipal Courthouse.
