News Brief: Shutoff Threat Nets $139,000, Mayor Says [Poll]

Mayor Joseph Polisena told the town council on Oct. 11 that more than half of overdue water payments had been received as of Oct 7.

At the Johnston Town Council meeting on Oct. 11, Mayor Joseph M. Polisena announced that about $139,000 of an estimated $228,000 in overdue water bill payments had been received by the town as of last Friday.

During a discussion on tax abatements, Council Vice President Stephanie Manzi asked Polisena about the progress of the town's efforts to collect past-due water bills, which included a shut-off threat issued by Polisena on Sept. 26.

"Our collecting [effort] has been very, very successful," Polisena said during the session, held at the muncipal court. "Obviously, it's working."

In many cases, the homes subject to the shutoff threat are bank-owned, Polisena explained, "so — pardon the pun — it's money in the bank," since banks must stay current with taxes and other fees on properties.
