News Brief: Langevin Promises He'll "Fight To Protect" Senior Programs

The U.S. Congressman visits the Johnston Senior Center at lunchtime to talk with elder constituents.

On the second stop of his visit to Johnston on March 28, U.S. Congressman James Langevin visited the Johnston Senior Center to meet elder constituents during lunch hour.

Langevin noted the lack of a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for Social Security recipients this year, and wondered aloud how the Social Security Administration decided against an increase. He also addressed recent positive economic news and cast doubt on whether it's true.

"Even though we're talking about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, for people without a job, it's not happening quickly enough," Langevin said.

The Congressman also spoke about Republican attempts to slash funding to so-called entitlement programs — money that the seniors assembled typically depend upon for their living expenses.

"That's my promise to you, that I will always fight to protect Social Security and Medicare," Langevin to the approximately 40 seniors.
