News Brief: Council OKs Briarcliffe Zone Change
The change clears one hurdle on the way toward an assisted living facility on Old Pocasset Road.
At its Sept. 12 meeting, the Johnston Town Council voted 4-0 to change the zoning designation on two parcels of landowned by Briarcliffe Manor, whose owners hope to build an assisted living facility on the land.
The council's decision changes the designation on the land to a Planned District/Continuing Care Retirement Community, from R-40 (residential).
Council Vice President Stephanie Manzi was absent from the vote.

Attorney William Landry described the Briarcliffe plan as being in the "conceptual stage," with two stories and 75 rooms proposed for a new assisted living facility. Depending on the number of couples at the facility, there could be up to 100 beds, Landry said.
