News Brief: Council Holds First Hearing On Retirement Board Change

The move would allow five-year veterans of the police and fire departments to serve on the new board.

A change to the eligibility requirements for police and fire personnel to serve on Johnston's cleared its first hurdle on May 9, as the town council held a public reading for an amendment to the ordinance that created the commission.

Currently, firefighters and police officers with at least 10 years of service may be appointed to the retirement board; the change would lower the term to five years.

Under the Town Charter, changes to ordinances must be read at a public hearing first, then reviewed a second time in public session before the council may vote on them. The second public hearing on the change to Ordinance 47-39 is scheduled for June 13.
