News Brief: Council Gives OK to Chafee Municipal Reform Bills

Gov. Lincoln Chafee asked the Johnston Town Council on Monday night to support a group of bills he has submitted to the General Assembly.


In a rare appearance before a local town council, Gov. Lincoln Chafee on Monday night testified in favor of a set of seven bills he has submtted to the General Assembly that would allow cities and towns more control over their local finances.

At their meeting held at the , town councilors voted unanimously to support Chafee's legislative proposals, which he has termed "tools" for local communities to help them navigate the current economic climate.

Mayor Joseph Polisena said of Chafee: "He gets it," and noted Chafee's prior service as mayor and city councilor in Warwick, as well as U.S. Senator.
