Johnston Counts Three Independents among 37 Seeking Assembly Seats

The Providence Journal reported that more Independent candidates are running for state House and Senate in 2012 than in recent elections.

This year's election promises to have the highest number of unaffiliated candidates in recent years, the Providence Journal reported — and Johnston has three running for General Assembly seats.

The local hopefuls are among 37 Indpendents who have filed statewide to run in House and Senate races, the newspaper reported, slightly more than the 32 in 2010 and more than double the 18 who ran in 2008.

In Johnston, Independents Karin Gorman and Nicole Lyons have announced their intention to run for the Dist. 43 seat now held by Democrat Rep. Deborah Fellela, who also faces a potential primary challenger in Annette Berarducci.

And incumbent Democrat Rep. Peter Petrarca (Dist. 44) faces the possibility of a primary against Gregory Costantino and an election battle with Independent James D'Ambra and Republican James Archer.

The Secretary of State's office is expected to certify the signatures of prospective candidates later this week.
