Johnston Candidates Seek Signatures

They've filed to run in this year's elections — now prospective candidates have to collect signatures and have them certified.

The process of getting on this year's ballot for the September primary and November election has only just begun for the people who filed for candidacy at last week.

Board of Canvassers Clerk Laurie aRusso explained during a recent interview that all prospective candidates for local and state General Assembly offices must collect and submit 50 valid signatures by July 13 at 4 pm.

After that, aRusso said, the local canvassing board has until July 19 to certify the signatures — ensuring that they belong to real people — and confirm the candidates' eligibility with the Rhode Island Secretary of State's office.

Once the certification process is complete, the final list of candidates will be set — meaning some people who filed won't make the ballot.

Based on the filings submitted to Town Hall, Mayor Joseph Polisena is expected to face a challenge from Republican Peter Filippi III, and several candidates are contesting the town council seats in Wards 1, 2, and 4.

Also this year, a small portion of Johnston is part of state Senate District 22, where Sen. John Tassoni is not running for re-election.

The new boundary takes an area near George Waterman Road up to Cherry Hill Road before taking a jagged path along the North Providence border back to the Smithfield line. [See the new Senate Dist. 22 boundary on the accompanying .pdf]
