Campaigns Make Final GOTV Push

Volunteers — and candidates — were at Johnston Democratic Headquarters trying to garner more votes in the last few hours of today's primary.

 

The number of voters casting ballots in today's primary in Johnnston crept above 2,000 just before 6 pm today, with volunteers working the phone banks at Democratic Headquarters to get more people out to the polls.

"If [people] haven't voted, the phone banks are occupied here with volunteers making phone calls to those identified voters that we know are supporters of the endorsed candidates, and we'll get them out," explained Democratic Chairman Richard DelFino. "Games are won in the fourth quarter, and this is where we think the organization is going to make a difference."

As expected in Ward 1, where incumbent Councilwoman Eileen Fuoco is in her second consecutive three-way Democratic primary, the two polling places there reported the highest vote counts at 6 pm — 266 at Pell Manor and 286 at .

, the home district of incumbent Sen. Frank Lombardo, had 228 ballots counted — and Lombardo was aiming for more, as he took a spot at the Democratic office at 1500 Atwood Ave. and made calls to potential voters.

Peter DelPonte, the town's code enforcement officer and coordinator of the effort at Democratic HQ, said he hoped to get 3,000 voters to the polls by 8 pm tonight.
