Broadrock to Pay Johnston $3M

The methane gas-collecting company agreed to make the payments to settle a December 2011 lawsuit.

Two years after odors from the Central Landfill caused widespread reports from surrounding towns, Mayor Joseph Polisena announced on Sept. 10 that Broadrock Renewables, LLC, will pay $3 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the town.

During an afternoon press conference at Johnston Municipal Court, Polisena said the money would go into the town's capital improvement fund to help pay for emergency and other repairs to municipal facilities.

Polisena and officials from Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, the other company that operates at the Landfill, had previously announced a $3-million settlement to the town's suit against RIRRC.

In response to what Polisena described as the RIRRC's "concern" about hiring a third-party gas-collecting company — yet to be determined, according to Broadrock CEO Doug Wilson — RIRRC has already offered $2 million to be added to Broadrock's payment.

That additional $2 million was offered by RIRRC in case the town was "successful with getting a third party" hired to run the gas-extraction system.
