5 Things To Know Today: June 21

Three blood drives; summer reading kick-off and Kindermusic at Mohr; land trust meeting; summer camp sign-ups; and today in history: Just when you thought it was safe to swim...

Roll Up Your Sleeve: The Rhode Island Blood Center is stepping up its collection efforts — and Johnston is doing its part with three local blood drives today:

Mohr Programs: Marian J. Mohr Library offers Kindermusic for kids 4 and older at 10:30 a.m. The library also hosts a summer reading kick-off event at 2:30 p.m. for middle and high school students. Rain or shine — I perfer "shine" myself. Kids who register will be entered to win an e-Reader.

Open Space: The Johnston Land Trust, committed to preserving open space in our fair town, is scheduled to meet tonight at 7 p.m. at Ferri Middle School.

Final Week: Now that the kids are finishing their school year, what are you going to do with them over the summer? One good idea is the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department's Summer Day Camp program. Kids from ages 6 (as of May 1, 2011) to 11 can participate. Six week and weekly programs also available. This is the last week to register — so get moving!

Da-DUM: On this date in 1976, the movie Jaws was released, changing the way people look at beaches — and Roy Scheider. "We're gonna need a bigger boat."
