5 Things To Know Today: July 28

Business seminar; Mohr programs; zoning board meets; a nice gift for your donation; and today in history: Imagine if you'd bought it then.

Boost Your Biz: Or, at least get some helpful tips on how to increase website traffic for your company at the We Mean Business: Websites 101 workshop being held today from 9 to 11 a.m., sponsored by the North Central Chamber of Commerce.

Vive La France: That's the spirit behind Marian J. Mohr Library's Visit France program scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and open to elementary school-age kids. Younger kiddos can enjoy story time for grade 1 and up, also at 10:30.

Zoning Board: It's one of those boards you may never know about — until you have an application being considered. But the zoning board can be a real hotbed of action when controversial developments are on the agenda. The board meets tonight at 7 p.m. at the senior center.

Pounds For Pints: All day today, at every Rhode Island Blood Center permanent location and mobile blood drive (there's one in Johnston today — see below), donors will receive a pound of Dunkin' Donuts coffee for rolling up their sleeves. Today's local drive is at — conveniently — the Dunkin' Donuts at 2738 Hartford Ave. from 3 to 8 p.m.

Eight-Fold Hike: That's the rise in gold prices since this date in 1978, when the precious metal topped $200 an ounce for the first time. (The Economic Times website reported a close of $1,625 per ounce on July 27.)
