Video: Three New Officers Join Johnston PD

The local police department appointed three new probationary patrol officers to its ranks, and promoted Edward Gonzalez to the rank of full patrolman on May 30.

Mayor Joseph Polisena officially adminstered the oath of office to three new probationary patrolmen, and promoted Edward Gonzalez to the rank of full patrolman following his one-year probationary period, during a ceremony at headquarters on May 30.

Johnston resident David Galligan, Remy Mendez of Central Falls, and Derick Ofori of Pawtucket joined family members, friends, and many of their new colleagues in the Lt. John J. Sinotte Memorial Roll Call Room at about 11 am to officially join the department.

In the accompanying video, Deputy Chief David DeCesare explains the process of choosing the three new officers, and Galligan recites the Police Officers Code of Ethics.

Police Chief Richard Tamburini explained that Galligan also had the honor of reciting the code at the recent Rhode Island State Police Municipal Police Academy graduation ceremonies.

"I was so impressed with that — it was so inspirational, and I've asked him if he would do it today, because the mayor could not make it on Friday," Tamburini said.

Tamburini also apoke about the department's goal or remaining one of the state's top law enforcement agencies.

"When we select officers to join this department — one of the best departments in Rhode Island — we always consider the future of the department," Tamburini explained. "They are the future of the department — not us, so we need to make sure we recruit the best, and these guys are the best."
