Wrong Turn Damages Poles, Wires

The driver of the truck was trying to turn around on Ruth Street, police reported.

The driver of a tractor trailer was trying to turn around on Ruth Street on July 6 when his truck caught utility wires and pulled down two telephone poles, reported.

According to the police report, released by Deputy Chief David DeCesare on July 7, Michael Alexander, of 1266 West Shore Rd., Warwick, was driving on Killingly Street and looking for Maria Street at about 2 p.m. on July 7.

Believing he had missed his turn, Alexander told police, he tried to turn the rig around by turning onto Ruth Street and then Ray Street.

The trailer caught a low-hanging wire as Alexander turned onto Ray Street and pulled down two poles and "multiple other wires," Ptlm. Jared DeAngelis reported.

When Alexander realized what had happened, DeAngelis reported, he stopped the truck and called police.

National Grid crews responded to the scene to shut off electric service, since the wires were still live.

By 4 p.m., workers were replacing the electrical and other wires. No injuries were reported, and no charges were filed.
