Three Suspects Arrested for Shoplifting from Smithfield Store

The Rhode Island State Police announced the arrests on Thursday morning.

Three Massachusetts people face shoplifting charges following their arrest by Rhode Island State Police on Wednesday afternoon.

Col. Steven O'Donnell announced that Stephen Benson, 28, of 69 East Main Street, Norton; Laurabeth Degirolamo, 31, of 152 Broadway, Taunton; and Jeffrey Hesketh, 37, of 11 Eastern Ave., Hyde Park, each face one misdemeanor count of larceny.

In a statement released Thursday morning, O'Donnell said that Smithfield Police issued a report of shoplifting from the Kohl's department store at Smithfield Crossing at about 1 pm Wednesday.

State troopers saw a car matching the description provided by the local officers, and followed it on I-295 north to Rte. 99 before stopping the car and arresting the three suspects.

O'Donnell said officers recovered the merchandise that was reported stolen from the store.

State Police officers brought the three to the Adult Correctional Institutions, Cranston, to await arraignment hearings scheduled for this morning.
