Police Log: Oct. 14 to Oct. 17

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for Oct. 14 to Oct. 17. Where an arrest is reported, it does not indicate a conviction.

Three arrested before house party:

arrested three people on Oct. 14 as they gathered to attend a house party on Allendale Avenue. Det. Christopher DeCesare and Det. Lt. Frank Levesque noticed several people in the roadway and a large number of cars “gathering around 81 Allendale Avenue” as they patrolled the area on Friday night.

According to police reports, the detectives saw one of the men walking in the roadway drinking a beer and carrying an opened 30-pack of beer. The man identified himself as Christian J. Laboissonniere, 19, of 101 Farnum Pike, Smithfied. Laboissonniere told the detectives he was “going to a house party and he was getting drunk,” according to DeCesare’s report.

People began to disperse as more officers arrived, according to the police reports. Officers arrested Devin M. Costa, 22, on an active court warrant for failure to appear in court on a suspended license charge.

Ptlm. Joseph Salvadore arrested Laboissonniere on a charge of possession of an alcoholic beverage by an underage person. Salvadore confiscated the package of beer that contained 15 aluminum beer cans as evidence.

On his way to the scene at about 11 p.m., Ptlm. Troy Maddocks reported that a car with four people inside passed him on the road. The four appeared to be under 21 years old, according to his report. A passenger in the back seat, identified as Brandon M. McGarrahan, allegedly slouched down as they drove past Maddocks.

After Maddocks stopped the car, the driver, whom police did not identify, told him that the group was headed to a party on Allendale Avenue, but changed their minds when they saw the Johnston Police officers. As Maddocks spoke with McGarrahan, he detected the odor of alcohol emanating from his breath. As McGarrahan exited the car, Maddocks saw a Corona beer bottle. McGarrahan allegedly admitted the Corona was his. Maddocks arrested McGarrahan, 18, of 32 George Waterman Rd., on a charge of possession of a beverage by an underage person.

Laboissonniere and McGarrahan were both released with summonses to appear in Third District Court on Oct. 26.

The officers also checked the alleged location of the party in the second floor apartment of 81 Allendale Ave., but there was no response, according to Levesque’s report.

DUI arrest:

Johnston Police arrested David S. Hanson, 49, of 136 Wheeler Ave., Cranston, on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, first offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and driving with a suspended license.

On Oct. 16 around 8:30 p.m., Hanson allegedly drove out of the parking lot of 8 Greenville Ave. and drove over the curb and onto the sidewalk with both wheels, according to Sgt. Michael Babbitt’s report. Hanson allegedly continued driving on Greenville Avenue without the car’s headlights on.

After Babbitt pulled Hanson over, he reported that he found Hanson with extremely bloodshot eyes and slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his breath. When Babbitt asked Hanson how much he had to drink, he allegedly responded with “too many.”

Hanson consented to a field sobriety test. As Babbitt demonstrated the Walk and Turn test, Hanson swayed and stumbled. Hanson allegedly said, “I can’t do this. I can barely stand.”

Hanson refused to submit to a chemical test. He told Babbitt he consumed five beers at the Drunken Clam at 8 Greenville Ave. Hanson was arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance. His court date is Oct. 26 in Third District Court.
