Police Log: Nov. 19 to 21

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for Nov.19 to 21. Where an arrest is reported, it does not indicate a conviction.

Larceny at AT&T store:

made separate arrests of James P. Fleet and Steven M. Fleet on charges of larceny over $500 and conspiracy.

On Oct. 22 Ptlmn. Adam Parkinson and Mark A. Viera, and Det. Christopher DeCesare responded to a call of a shoplifting at the AT&T store at 1473 Atwood Ave. around 2:50 p.m. The sales consultant told Viera two males entered the store and went to opposite sides of the store. The first suspect allegedly activated the alarm on the display cell phone when he attempted to remove the phone. The consultant used his alarm key to deactivate the alarm. At that time the second suspect allegedly dislodged a phone from the other end of the store and as the consultant approached him the suspect pocketed the phone and ran out of the store.

The worker followed the suspect outside and was able to get the license plate and a description of the truck the suspect used to flee the scene. When the worker re-entered the store the first suspect was gone along with another cell phone, according to the police report.

On Nov. 3, police served James Fleet, 40, of 636 Killingly St., with the larceny charges at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, where he was being held following an arrest in Providence the day before.

He was arraigned and bail was set at $2,000 with surety and a no-trespass order was issued for the AT&T store. He was then sent to Superior Court as a bail violator.

Steven Fleet, 36, of 9 Homeland St., Johnston, was arrested on Nov. 19 on a charge of larceny over $500 and conspiracy. He was arraigned and released on $5,000 personal recognizance with a scheduled court date of Nov. 20.

Car and foot chase:

Johnston Police on Nov. 19 arrested Miguel A. Palavra, 27, of 156 Harrison St., Pawtucket, on a charge of possession of heroin, reckless driving, resisting arrest, driving after denial, suspension/revocation of license, and driving in possession of a controlled substance.

According to police reports, a white SUV sped past Ptlm. Joseph Salvadore at a high rate of speed, going in the opposite direction on Killingly Street. Salvadore turned his cruiser around and followed the vehicle. The driver was going 40 miles per hour in a 25 m.p.h. zone, according to the police report.

After Salvadore pulled over the SUV, the driver put the vehicle in drive and fled the scene, according to Salvadore’s report.

Salvadore followed the SUV as the driver turned onto Ophelia Street. As the driver approached the dead end he drove the SUV onto the front lawn of a home and jumped out of the driver’s side window, according to the police
report. Salvadore chased the suspect through backyards and over a fence before he was able to tackle Palavra. During the chase Salvadore stated in his report he saw Palavra make a throwing motion. The officers located a hard brown substance in a plastic baggy. The substance tested positive for Heroin.

Palavra was arraigned and bail was set at $10,000 with surety. Palavra was remanded to the ACI and received a pre-arraignment date of Jan. 23.

Violation of Protective Order:

Johnston Police arrested Gary R. Tallo, 20, on a charge of violation of protective order on Nov. 20 after he allegedly went to his ex-girlfriend’s house on Nov. 20.

When his ex-girlfriend returned home, Tallo allegedly yelled obscenities at her and drove away at a high rate of speed. A witness confirmed Tallo’s ex-girlfriend’s statement.

Police found Tallo at his current girlfriend’s home. He was arraigned and surety bail was set. Tallo was presented as a bail violator stemming from an arrest in Cranston on charges of felony assault, breaking and entering a dwelling, and receiving stolen goods from August. Tallo was held without bail.
