Police Log: May 9 to May 12

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for May 9 to May 12, 2011.

A.M. DUI arrest – second offense:

Patrolmen Thomas R. Hayden and Mario Mennella Jr. responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident at 985 Plainfield St. at 5:35 a.m. on May 10. When the officers arrived, personnel were attending to the operator of the 2003 Gray Pontiac Grand Am that had struck a parked car. The driver identified himself with a license bearing the name Christopher Paquette, later identified as Christopher J. McGloin. McGloin told Hayden that he was driving east on Plainfield Street. He said he was driving his friend home and he fell asleep.

Hayden detected “a strong alcoholic beverage emanating from McGloin’s breath." He was also slurring his words as he spoke to Hayden, according the police report. Mennella began to conduct a field sobriety test on McGloin as Hayden investigated the accident.

As Hayden was examining the damage to the Grand Am, “JFD personnel advised that they had found an unconscious male wedged between the rear seats,” according to Hayden’s report. The passenger was Joel Perez, the owner of the Grand Am. McGloin said Perez was his “good friend” but he failed to tell Hayden that Perez was in the vehicle, according to the police report. Perez was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

McGloin failed the field sobriety tests and blew a .156 on the preliminary breath test. He was placed under arrest and when he was searched at headquarters four small blue pills were located in his front pocket. McGloin was photographed and finger printed. The finger prints revealed that “Paquette” was actually Christopher J. McGloin.

Police charged McGloin, 21, of 219 Oakland Ave., Providence, with a charge of possession of a scheduled substance; driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, second offense; driving after denial, revocation, or suspension of license; and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty. McGloin was arraigned and bail was set at $10,000 personal recognizance. McGloin was then transported to the Adut Correctional Institutions, where he was held without bail for being a district court violator.

Hit and run on Greenville Avenue:

Patrolman John D. DeAngelis responded to a call of a hit and run at 515 Greenville Ave. at 11 a.m. on May 11. Michael St. Angelo, owner of East Coast Masonry, discovered damage to the fence on the property around 9 a.m., according to the police report. DeAngelis reported that a metal fence post was struck and bent backwards, and that the fence attached had sustained minor damage. Two tire marks led to the damaged fence pole. DeAngelis was able to determine that the vehicle traveled through the intersection of Atwood Avenue and Greenville Avenue, struck the curb in front of East Coast Masonry, “traveled onto the sidewalk, skidded into the parking lot and stopped upon striking the pole,” according to his report. Tire marks also led away from the scene.

DeAngelis searched the area and discovered a white Nissan Maxima parked at the Citgo Food Mart across the street at 514 Greenville Ave. The front bumper had damage consistent to striking a fence pole. A pool of oil was on the asphalt under the Maxima and there were scuff marks on the tires.

The Maxima was towed and DeAngelis made contact with Jennifer Bliss of 603 Pleasant Valley Parkway, Providence. She stated that the car was her mother’s but Bliss was driving the car at the time of the accident around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night. “She could not explain at the time how the collision occurred and that she was unable to notify police because she lost her cell phone,” according to DeAngelis’ report.

Bliss received a citation for failing to report an accident.
