Police Log: May 6 to May 8

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for May 6 to May 8, 2011.

Bench warrant arrest:

Ryan S. Bergantino, 21, of 11 Enterprise St., Cranston, was arrested on a bench warrant at 1:05 a.m. on May 7.  Patrolman Michael J. Babbitt was at a fixed post on Plainfield Street when he saw Bergantino’s vehicle pass. “I recognized the operator through prior contacts,” Babbitt wrote in his report.  Babbitt said he also knew that Bergantino had two bench warrants in his name. The warrants were related to misdemeanor marijuana charges. Babbitt stopped Bergantino's vehicle and placed him under arrest. His vehicle was towed and Bergantino was arraigned and released after paying fines and costs.

Patrolman Joseph A. McGinn responded to Burling Coat Factory at 1386 Atwood Ave. for a report of a shoplifter in custody. McGinn arrived at the store around 5:40 p.m. on May 7. Store Manager Antonio Ourique told McGinn that loss prevention personnel stopped Maria Soto in the parking lot after she left the store. Soto allegedly had $32.98 of stolen merchandise in her hand bag when the loss prevention personnel stopped her. Soto allegedly admitted to stealing the merchandise from the store.  Ourique did not file a criminal complaint but did seek a trespass complaint. A trespass complaint was issued.
