Police Log: March 7 to March 10

This is a summary of reports provided to Johnston Patch by the Johnston Police Department for March 7 through March 10.

Shoplifting Beauty Products:

Patrolman Stephen R. Altomari responded to CVS Pharmacy at 1400 Hartford Ave. for a report of shoplifting. At about 5:30 a.m. on March 1, a dark-colored four-door car was parked near the front door of CVS. A Hispanic male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, hat and gloves entered the store with a while male wearing a brown coat, khakis, a cap and gloves, according to the police report.

The men browsed separately and then met in the aisle that contained high-end skin care and beauty products. The white male allegedly filled a plastic handbasket with merchandise and the Hispanic male allegedly put items in his sweatshirt pocket and in the handbasket. They then exited the store without paying for the products, according to the report. The men left the parking lot in the dark colored sedan and the license plate was captured on the surveillance footage.

On March 3, Detectives Thomas M. Dwyer and Loffredi met with an agent in the United States Secret Service to review the surveillance footage in an effort to read the license plate. They were able to make out the last three numbers, 935, but they were not able to read the first two letters, according to Dwyer’s report. Detective Steven Lopez viewed the surveillance tape and identified one of the suspects as Paul A. Zazzaro, a man Lopez has had “numerous contacts with,” according to Dwyer’s report. Zazzaro was recently released from the ACI on Feb. 3.

An arrest warrant was signed for Zazzaro on March 7. On that day, Dwyer learned that a CVS in Somerset, Mass. had a similar shoplifting event take placethe day before. The two suspects matched the description of the men that allegedly shoplifted from the Johnston store. They were also driving a stolen green Toyota four-door with Rhode Island registration YH-935.
