Police Log: March 4 to March 7

This is a summary of reports provided to Johnston Patch by the Johnston Police Department for March 4 to March 7, 2011.

Stealing for art's sake:

Patrolmen Michael Edwards and Michael Protano responded to 100 Peck Hill Road for an active industrial alarm on March 5 around 5 p.m. When they arrived they began to check the doors and windows in a counter-clockwise direction, according to Edwards’ report. The officers discovered a green Dodge Caravan parked at the back of the building, unoccupied.

On the north side of the building they saw a footprint in the snow that led to a broken doorway. As they were examining the door the officers “heard the sound of glass breaking followed by a loud thump,” according to Edwards’ report. They ran around the corner to find Garrett M. Gould climbing out of a window. Underneath the window was broken glass, two boxes of scrap metal, and a pair of bolt cutters, according to Edwards’ report.

The officers ordered Gould out of the window and he was placed in handcuffs. Gould allegedly told the officers he was taking the items to use for his artwork. The Caravan in the back of the building was registered to his mother and was towed from the scene. A search of the building revealed that Gould was the only one on the premises.

Gould, 18, of 29 Institute Lane, North Scituate, was arrested on a charge of felony breaking and entering a building during daytime. He was arraigned and released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

Habitual shoplifter:

Officers responded to Burlington Coat Factory at 1386 Atwood Ave., Johnston, for a report of a shoplifter in custody. On March 5, officers arrived at the store shortly after 9 p.m. The assistant store manager, Phoulai Saythideth, told officers that Stacie M. Dorego entered the store and purchased a handbag. Dorego allegedly left the store and returned with the handbag, according to the police report. Saythideth said Dorego then filled the handbag with $125.19 worth of items and left the store without paying for the items.

Burlington Coat Factory filed an active criminal trespass complaint against Dorego in September, 2010. Dorego also has two prior convictions for shoplifting. Dorego, 38, of 16 Pershing Road, Johnston, was arrested on a charge of being a habitual shoplifting offender and willful trespass. She was arraigned and held without bail for being a probation violator and was remanded to the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. Bail was set at $1,000 with surety on the new charges.
