Police Log: March 31 to April 4

This is a summary of reports provided to Johnston Patch by the Johnston Police Department for March 31 to April 4, 2011.

Hate crime defendant arrested on domestic assault warrant:

Vincent B. Smith, 49, of 39 Dale Ave., Johnston, was arrested on an active warrant on Thursday, March 31 around 11:58 a.m.  Johnston Police Lt. Richard Norato, Sgt. Leclair, Patrolman Jeffrey Fryer, and Patrolman Mark A. Vieira located Smith at 39 Dale Ave. in an upstairs bedroom sleeping when the officers arrived. He was taken into custody without incident, according to the police report. Smith was arraigned on the domestic assault charge and surety bail was set at $1,000. He was also presented as a bail violator and was remanded to the ACI.

On April 5, R.I. Atty. Gen Peter Kilmartin announced that Smith had agreed to a permanent injunction prohibiting him from contacting the neighbors in the Dale Avenue apartment building, after Smith's March 11 arrest for allegedly committing a hate crime.

Five warrants lead to arrest:

John Vitale, 44, of 7 Olneyville Square, Providence, was arrested at the Bel-Air Motor Inn on Friday, April 1. There were four active Superior Court warrants for Vitale. The warrants included: violation of probation for failure to appear for violation hearing for assault with intent specified felonies and three warrants for violation of probation for second degree robbery. There was also a 6th District Court Warrant for failure to appear for pre-trial for a misdemeanor larceny charge.
