Police Log: June 4 to June 10

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for June 4 to June 9, 2011. It does not indicate a conviction.

Hit and Run:

Johnston Police charged Javier Perez, 31, of 653 Douglas Ave., Providence, with a hit-and-run on June 4 after his car allegedly hit a parked van.

Patrolman Kevin Brady responded to the report of a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Plainfield Pike and Green Hill Avenue. Luis Hernandez-Almonte of Cranston was in the parking lot of 2131 Plainfield Pike with his white 2001 Ford Econoline. There was damage to the driver’s side bumper, according to Brady’s report.

Hernandez-Almonte told Brady that he was driving west on Plainfield Pike when the driver of a tan 1997 Ford Taurus passed him on the left, driving on the wrong side of the road. When the vehicles reached the intersection at Green Hill, the driver of the Taurus attempted to turn right onto Green Hill. Hernandez-Almonte said he tried to stop but his van struck the passenger side door of the Taurus. The driver of the Taurus fled the scene. Brady ran the registration of the Taurus and it was registered to Perez.

Patrolman Stephen R. Altomari and Sgt. Michael J. Babbitt went to Perez’s address and found the Taurus was in driveway with “moderate damage to the passenger’s side of the vehicle,” according to Babbitt’s report.

The officers found Perez reclined in the driver’s seat. Perez allegedly admitted to driving the car on Plainfield Pike but he denied being involved in the accident. Perez was arrested, arraigned, and released with a court summons.

Disorderly Conduct Arrest:

Sgt. Megan Boulet and Patrolmen Luca Lancellotti Jr. and Kevin Brady responded to a call requesting a drunken person be removed from an apartment. Celeste Croce called police headquarters because her husband, Lorenzon R. Croce, allegedly had been drinking and became verbally abusive toward their children.  In an effort to prevent the verbal altercation from becoming a physical one, she asked that Mr. Croce be removed from the home, according to the report.

Lancellotti spoke with Mr. Croce, who said nothing happened and he wasn’t going to leave the home. Mr. Croce eventually agreed to leave and stay with a friend for the night. When he was leaving and in the front yard, Mr. Croce allegedly yelled, “I’ll kill you, you f#$&ing cops.”

He then allegedly walked toward his wife yelling at her using profanity. Lancellotti stepped between them to prevent Mr. Croce from getting closer. Lancellotti grabbed Mr. Croce’s right arm and held him in place. Mr. Croce yelled more profanities at Lancellotti and then squared off with him with clenched fists, according to the police report.

Croce was ordered to put his hands behind his back because he was being arrested for disorderly conduct. Croce allegedly raised his hands with clenched fists again. Lancellotti took him to the ground and Croce continued to refuse to be cuffed. He flailed and kicked but was eventually cuffed.

Croce, 50, of 6 Oakland Ave., Johnston, was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct and resisting legal or illegal arrest. Croce was arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.
