This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for June 3 to June 5, 2011. It does not indicate a conviction.

Off-duty officer aids in pot arrest:

Steven Rodi, of 1360 Atwood Ave., was arrested on June 4 for possession of marijuana and Vicodin after an off-duty officer observed him in possession of the narcotics.

Patrolman Joseph McGinn, who was off-duty at the time, used his cell phone to call Johnston Patrolman Derrick Palazzo and report that he saw a white male in a black Lexus place a green leafy substance into a flattened cigar "blunt," according to Palazzo’s report. The Lexus was parked in the parking lot of the Gulf Express at 1180 Atwood Ave.

Palazzo arrived at the parking lot and approached the black Lexus. Rodi did not see Palazzo standing near his car as he continued to wrap the substance, according to Palazzo’s report. Palazzo watched Rodi for several minutes before identifying himself.

Rodi was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana, first offense, and possession of a scheduled substance, Vicodin. He was arraigned and released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

Domestic assault arrest:

Mary Sanders-Metz, of 20 Park St., was arrested on a charge of domestic simple assault and battery on Sunday, June 5. Johnston Police Sgt. Brian LeClair, Patrolman Michael Protano, and Patrolman Matthew V. Leveillee responded to the area of Park Street and Atwood Avenue for a call reporting a domestic assault around 11:40 p.m.

When the officers arrived Mark Vinbury and Sanders-Metz were verbally arguing. The officers separated them and learned that they were boyfriend and girlfriend. Vinbury had injuries on his face and was bleeding from his nose and mouth, according to Leveillee’s report. Vinbury told Leveillee that he was at Sanders-Metz’ apartment and when he decided to leave Sanders-Metz allegedly became upset and placed herself in front of the door to prevent Vinbury from leaving, according to the police report. The two argued and Sanders-Metz allegedly used closed fists to punch Vinbury in the face.

Vinbury eventually was able to leave the apartment and he contacted 911. Sanders-Metz continued to follow Vinbury as he walked towards Atwood Avenue. Sanders-Metz allegedly told Leveillee that she did attempt to keep Vinbury from leaving her apartment but denied assaulting him. She allegedly could not explain how Vinbury sustained his injuries.

Leveillee “observed Mary to be under the influence of alcohol.” She would not tell Leveillee what she consumed. Sanders-Metz was placed under arrest.  When the officers tried to process Sanders-Metz at police headquaters she became “increasingly defiant,” according to the report. She tried to remove her clothing and then passively sat down and refused to be processed. Sanders-Metz was placed in a holding cell where she began to scream vulgarities and kick the cell walls and bed. She would repeatedly remove her clothing “to expose herself” and then redress, according to the police report. Sanders-Metz allegedly continued that behavior for about an hour. She was held pending processing and arraignment.
