Police Log: June 28 to July 1

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for June 28 to July 1, 2011. It does not indicate a conviction.

Vandals tag two businesses:

Patrolman Jeffrey Fryer responded to two complaints of vandalism on June 28. The first complaint was from the manager at American Foam Co., located at 61 John St.

Fryer responded to the call shortly after 8 a.m. and spoke to the manager at American Foam, who told Fryer he noticed the graffiti at about 6:30 a.m. and that the graffiti was not there when he left work the day before around 4:30 p.m.

Black spray paint was used to mark an area at the southwest corner of the building and the cement stairway, according to Fryer’s report. At 9:05 a.m. a call came in for vandalism at Unique Painting Company Inc., at 66 Mill St. The owner of the business told Fryer he noticed the black spray painted markings around 6 a.m.

The vandal spray-painted the south side of the building, and the owner said the markings were not there at 5 p.m. the night before. Both the markings on the buildings were similar, according to Fryer’s reports.

Thieves strike worksite:

Patrolman Mark Bairos and Lt. Thomas Dolan responded to the National Grid substation at 2100 Hartford Ave. on June 28 for a report of stolen copper. Employees reported that about 10 copper “jug handles” were removed from electrical stations and a copper ground wire was removed. The suspect or suspects allegedly cut the lock for the gate to gain entry to the area. The estimated value of the items is over $500.

Shoplifting at Burlington Coat Factory:

Police are seeking three black men who allegedly stole between $500 and $700 worth of merchandise from Burlington Coat Factory on June 28. The three suspects allegedly entered the store together. A loss prevention employee saw the first of the three men leave the store with the merchandise. The male suspect allegedly tried to conceal the clothing under his arms and then lifted his arms above the security sensors as he left through the front entrance.

When he loss prevention employee tried to stop the first suspect, the two other men exited the store with clothing still on the hangers. A driver was waiting for the three men in a gold sedan with Rhode Island license plates. They fled north on Atwood Avenue, according to Patrolman Michael Protano’s report.
