Police Log: June 16 to June 19

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for June 16 to June 19, 2011. It does not indicate a conviction.

Alleged threat to cop leads to arrest:

Michael J. Romano of 6 Frances Ave., was arrested on a charge of simple assault and battery, resisting legal or illegal arrest, and disorderly conduct. On June 17, Romano allegedly walked up to the passenger side of Patrolman Luca A. Lancellotti Jr.’s police cruiser as he was working a traffic detail, and began banging on the passenger window with his cane. As he was banging on the window, Romano was also yelling at Lancellotti. Lancellotti got out of the cruiser and
approached Romano to find out what was wrong.

Romano waved his arms around in an aggressive manner and stated: “You tell that badge number 30 to stay the [expletive] away from my house,” according to Lancellotti’s report. Sgt. David Alverson was passing by and Lancellotti then flagged down Sgt. David Alverson, who was driving by the scene. Romano walked away from the officers toward the 7-Eleven on Hartford Avenue and continued to yell using profanities, according to the police report. Romano was instructed to lower his voice. Romano turned around and moved toward the officers waving his cane at them and continued to swear and make threats.

Romano was told he was under arrest for disorderly conduct. Romano responded: “[Expletive] you. I’m not being arrested,” and walked away, according to Lancellotti’s report. As the officers tried to place Romano under arrest, he lowered his body weight, turned away from the officers, tried to break free, and continued to flail his arms as the officers held him to the ground. He also reportedly tried to punch Lancellotti while on the ground. Romano would not follow the commands to stop resisting, and Alverson used Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper) spray to subdue Romano and place him under arrest.

Romano was arraigned at the police department and released on $5,000 personal recognizance.

Domestic assault arrest:

Patrolman Joseph A. McGinn, Sgt. Crosby, and Patrolman Brady responded to a call requesting a female be removed from a residence at 21 Water St. on June 18.

When they arrived, Nicholas Castelli asked the officers to remove his wife, Deborah Castelli, from the home. Castelli told the officers Mrs. Castelli allegedly scratched, punched, and bit him in a drunken rage after he asked her for a divorce the previous night. She also allegedly stabbed him with a pencil in the left arm.

He threatened to call the police at that time, and she left him alone. Castelli told the officers that he didn’t call the previous night because there were children in the house, and because he believed the behavior was alcohol-induced.

On June 18, police reports state, Mrs. Castelli began drinking in the afternoon and began to argue again with Mr. Castelli. When she refused to leave the house, Mr. Castelli called the police.

As he was talking to the dispatcher, Mrs. Castelli allegedly began to scratch him and attempted to tackle him to the floor to try to get the phone away, according to the report.

Mrs. Castelli allegedly admitted to McGinn that she did bite and scratch her husband and that she was intoxicated.

Police charged Deborah Castelli with domestic felony assault, domestic simple assault, and domestic disorderly conduct. Castelli was arraigned and released on $5,000 personal recognizance, and a no-contact order was issued.

Firearms taken after domestic assault arrest:

Lt. Abbruzzese, Sgt. Peacock, Patrolman Palazzo, and Patrolman Jared DeAngelis responded to 5 Alcazar Ave. on June 19 for a call reporting a disturbance.

When the officers arrived, they found three people standing outside of the home, two identified as Robert and Patricia Calise, and the third an unidentified 16-year-old girl.

Patricia Calise told the officers that nothing happened and that they could leave, as she dabbed blood away from her lip, according to DeAngelis’ report. When DeAngelis asked the others what happened, Patricia told them to "shut up" as they responded to the questions, according to the report.

When asked if anyone was inside the home, Patricia said "no," and then quickly went inside. DeAngelis followed her and saw a fourth person, Danae Calise, standing at the back of the home.

The 16-year old told the officers that her grandfather, Robert, drove her to 5 Alcazar Ave. so that she could “make amends with Danae,” according to the police report. Robert went inside the home to get Danae and the minor waited in the passenger seat of the car. Danae allegedly ran out of the home to the car and began to yell at the minor and punch her in the head with a closed fist. Danae then allegedly twisted the girl’s head and neck.

Robert tried to stop Danae, and in return she struck him in the back, punching him several times, according to the reports.

Danae told DeAngelis that she and the 16-year old had a disagreement over the phone and through text messaging. Danae continued a “profanity-laden rant” about the minor, and Abbruzzese and DeAngelis told her to calm down and watch her language multiple times, according to the police report.

She told the officers that she was unprovoked when she attacked the minor and that she (Danae) “instigated the argument,” DeAngelis reported. Danae began to yell at Patricia about other family matters and she was warned again to calm down and stop yelling.

Danae allegedly responded with: “Don’t [expletive] yell at me and tell me what to do. I’m going to do whatever the [expletive] I want.”

Danae was arrested and handcuffed. She continued to yell profanities at Patricia. When she was walked toward the front door, she fell to the ground to prevent being escorted out.

She attempted to sit on the floor and repeatedly told DeAngelis to get his “[expletive] hands” off of her. DeAngelis picked Danae up by her arm and continued to walk her toward the front door, where she placed her feet on the doorframe.

DeAngelis eventually pushed her through the door. When she saw the minor and Robert talking with the other officers she yelled: “You’re all [expletive] dead. I’m going to kill all you mother[expletive].”

Police charged Danae M. Calise of 5 Alcazar Ave., with domestic assault on a person over 60 resulting in bodily injury, simple assault or battery, disorderly conduct, and resisting legal or illegal arrest.

Sgt. Avlerson and Patrolman Michael E. Adreozzi transported Danae back to her home to retrieve a .22 caliber Walther and 2 bullet magazines. Her 9mm Kimber semi-automatic pistol was also turned over to the police for safe keeping.

Danae was released on $5,000 personal recognizance and a no-contact order was issued.

Assault on an officer:

Patrolmen Altomari and Michael E. Andreozzi responded to a call of a disturbance in the courtyard of the Park Street Housing Complex on June 19 around 6 p.m.

When Andreozzi arrived at the location, he saw Lisa Pezza waving her fists in the air as she screamed and yelled profanities. Andreozzi stated in his report that it appeared that Pezza was trying to start a fight. He heard Pezza say she was going to beat someone up if they didn’t repay the money she let them borrow. A crowd had formed and was watching the scene Pezza was creating. Patrick Integlia was holding Pezza back from attacking the person she was threatening.

Andreozzi tried to speak to Pezza. She told him, “Go [expletive] yourself. I’m not telling you [expletive] cops anything.” She walked toward Andreozzi and “forcefully bumped” into Andreozzi with her chest in an attempt to start an altercation with Andreozzi, according to the police reports.

Andreozzi took Pezza’s right arm and placed it behind her back and instructed her that she was being arrested for disorderly conduct. Pezza allegedly bumped into Andreozzi again and attempted to break free of his grasp. Andreozzi took Pezza to the ground and she tried to get up by lifting herself up with one knee.

Altomari helped Andreozzi place Pezza into handcuffs and mvoe her into a
sitting position. Pezza continued to yell profanities and suddenly pulled her left wrist out of the handcuff and began to stand up.

When Andreozzi pushed down on her right shoulder to prevent her from standing, Pezza allegedly shifted her weight and threw a closed fist punch directly at Andreozzi’s face. He blocked the strike with his forearm and then used pepper spray to subdue Pezza.

Police learned that prior to their arrival, Pezza allegedly slapped a neighbor in the face three times over a money dispute. Two men broke up the altercation, and Pezza allegedly punched one of the men in the face as they removed her from the neighbor’s apartment.

Police charged Pezza, of 20 Park St., with disorderly conduct, resisting legal or illegal arrest, and two chargers of simple assault or battery. Pezza was arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.
