Police Log: Jan. 6 to Jan. 7, 2012

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for Jan. 6 to Jan. 7, 2012. Where an arrest is reported, it does not indicate a conviction.

Assault, disorderly conduct:

arrested Michael J. Todaro, 26, of 185 Providence St., West Warwick, on a charge of simple assault or battery and disorderly conduct on Jan. 6. Sgts. David Alverson and Seth Crosby, and Ptlmn. Matthew Winsor, Stephen Altomari, and Jeffrey Fryer responded to a call of a man being chased by a woman and a man in the parking lot of Dunkin' Donuts at 1999 Plainfield St. around 2 p.m. on Jan. 6.

Fryer reported that he spoke with the victim, who was bleeding from the mouth and stated that his friend, Todaro, allegedly “sucker-punched” him after attempting to go after the victim’s wife, according to Fryer’s report.

Todaro the allegedly ran into the nearby woods. After officers responded to the scene, Todaro’s grandmother called him on his cell phone and convinced him to return from the woods, according to the police reports.

Todaro told officers that he was in the car with the victim and the victim’s wife, and alleged that she had tried to choke Todaro while he was in the car, according to Winsor’s report. After getting out of the car, Todaro said, the man and woman chased him and got into a verbal argument with him.

Todaro told police that he struck the victim out of self defense and then ran into the woods. Winsor reported that there were no marks around Todaro’s neck, and he was placed under arrest.

Todaro then allegedly began to yell profanities at the officers, banged his head on the middle divider in the police cruiser, and spat on the divider, seat, and passenger window of the police cruiser.

He was arraigned at police headquarters. A no-contact order was issued and Todaro was released on $1,500 surety bail until a scheduled court date of Jan. 18.

Four domestic charges:

Johnston Police arrested Luis G. Rivera, 21, of 121 Whittier Drive, Providence, on charges of domestic simple assault/battery; domestic disorderly conduct; domestic vandalism/malicious injury to property; domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone; and larceny under $500 on Jan. 7.

Rivera allegedly slapped his girlfriend in the face following a verbal argument in which he accused her of cheating on him with another man on Jan. 5. When Rivera’s girlfriend reached for her cell phone in an attempt to call 9-1-1, Rivera allegedly punched the phone with his fist and took the SIM card from the phone. The victim was able to call 9-1-1 from another phone and Rivera left before the police arrived, according to Ptlm. Jared DeAngelis’ report.

A warrant was issued for Rivera’s arrest on Jan. 5, and Providence Police arrested Rivera on the warrant on Jan. 7. He was arraigned and remanded to the ACI on $10,000 surety bail. A no-contact order was also issued.

Assault at Shell Station:

Johnston Police arrested Michael P. Mrozewicz, 32, of 6 Golini Drive, Johnston, on a charge of simple assault or battery and disorderly conduct on Jan. 7.

Sgt. David Alverson and Ptlmn. Philip Veins and Matthew Winsor responded to a call of a disturbance between a man and a woman at the East Side Shell at 1680 Hartford Ave. around 1:20 p.m. Jan. 7.

When Winsor arrived at the scene, Mrozewicz was allegedly emptying the contents of a suitcase onto the windshield of a car parked in the middle of the parking lot. Mrozewicz allegedly was yelling obscenities as he threw the contents of the suitcase on to the windshield, according to Winsor’s report.

Mrozewicz allegedly told Winsor he was in an argument with the female over money to pay for gas but the argument was not physical. Winsor noticed a laceration on Mrozewicz’s left eye and his nose. Mrozewicz stated he received those when he tried to open the passenger door from the outside of the car.

The victim reportedly told Winsor the argument started over money and escalated to Mrozewicz allegedly punching her and scratching her.

A witness stated Mrozewicz yelled at the female and struck her in the face with a closed fist three to five times. Mrozewicz was arrested and arraigned. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and a court date of Jan. 18.
