Crime & Safety

Police Log: Jan. 18 to 19

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for Jan. 18 to Jan. 19, 2012. Where an arrest is reported, it does not indicate a conviction.

Third Violation of a No Contact Order:

charged Joseph A. Rossi, 22, of Providence, with felony violation of a no-contact order on Jan. 19. Ptlmn. Ryan Lemieux, Joseph Scichilone Jr., and Derrick Palazzo responded to a call to remove a person from the Part II Lounge at 928 Plainfield St. around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 19.

When they arrived, the officers spoke with a woman who was the complainant in an earlier no-contact order against Rossi. The woman told police she had seen Rossi at a nearby friend's house, then left the house and went to the bar.

According to police reports, the woman said that Rossi followed her to the bar and tried to speak with her. She then called the police department.

The complainant reportedly did not tell the officers she had a no-contact order against Rossi; the officers learned of the order after Rossi was escorted from the property, according to the police report.

Ptlm. Adam Parkinson reported that he found Rossi walking down Union Avenue and took Rossi into custody.

According to online court records, Rossi pleaded no contest on two separate occasions in 2011 to violating no-contact orders; two other charges stemming from his arrest on Nov. 12 were dismissed.

Since Rossi had two previous arrests for violating protective orders, police charged him with a felony after his Jan. 19 arrest. He was arraigned in Third District Court, Warwick, on Jan. 20 and released on personal recognizance until a scheduled felony screening conference on March 12.

Rollover Accident:

Ptlm. Luca Lancellotti Jr. responded to a rollover accident at 1901 Plainfield St. around 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 along with members of the Johnston Fire Department, Cranston Police Department, and Cranston Fire Department.

The 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Matthew Rodrigues, of Cranston, was on its roof when Lancellotti arrived on scene. Rodrigues told Lancellotti he was driving west on Plainfield Street when he saw the box truck driven by Bruce Belleavoine of Smithfield stopped in the roadway in an effort to pull out onto Plainfield St., according to the accident report.

Rodrigues told police that Belleavoine suddenly pulled out into his travel lane, and that Rodrigues swerved to try to avoid the collision, but his vehicle collided with the box truck, causing it to rollover.

Belleavoine told Lancellotti he was trying to make a left turn onto Plainfield St. and Rodrigues tried to pass him as he executed the turn.

Rodrigues suffered a minor injury to his wrist and refused transportation to the hospital, according to Lancellotti’s report.
