Police Log: Jan. 13 to 14

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for Jan. 9 to Jan. 12, 2012. Where an arrest is reported, it does not indicate a conviction.

Driving stolen vehicle, suspended license:

charged Christoper Gardner, 44, of Providence, with a felony count of driving a vehicle without its owner's permission and two misdemeanor counts of larceny under $500 and driving with a suspended license on Jan. 13 after the owner of the truck reported the theft.

Ptlm. Michael Protano reported that the owner, who lives in Johnston, called the department and said that Gardner left a work site in the owner's truck without his permission, and was later involved in an accident.

The truck's owner reportedly went to Gardner's house, where he found the pick-up truck, and told Protano that the truck had been heavily damaged. The truck's owner also said that Gardner "was unable to explain" how the damage occurred.

Later that day, the truck's owner called Johnston Police to report that his wallet and cell phone were also missing. Sgt. Michael Babbitt and Ptlm. Joseph Salvadore went to Gardner's home, where Gardner reportedly admitted to taking the truck and claimed the truck's owner had given him the wallet, which Babbitt reported was missing most of the money that the truck's owner had said was inside it.

Officers arrested Gardner and transported him to headquarters, where he was arraigned and released on $10,000 personal recognizance with a scheduled March 16 court date.

Expired license, no insurance:

Police charged Baldemar Aguilar, 36, of Providence, with a misdemeanor count of driving with an expired license and a R.I. Traffic Tribunal violation of driving without proof of insurance on Jan. 14.

Ptlm. Joseph Scichilone Jr. reported that he saw the Toyota 4Runner driven by Aguilar leave the parking lot of Club Bebeto on Greenville Avenue "at a high rate of speed."

Scichilone wrote that Aguilar provided his license and registration, but no proof of insurance. After information on Aguilar's license came back showing that it had expired, Scichilone reported, he issued a citation to Aguilar with a scheduled Third District Court hearing on Jan. 25.

Officers transported Aguilar back to his home and had the SUV towed from the scene, Scichilone wrote.
