Police Log: Feb. 22 to Feb. 24

This is a summary of reports provided to Johnston Patch by the Johnston Police Department for Feb. 22 to Feb. 24, 2011.

Mom's return of prescription leads to son's arrest

Vincent J. Disano, 22, of 27 Topeka St., Cranston, was arrested on a felony charge of false representation to obtain a controlled substance after his mother turned in a prescription bottle she found in her son’s bedroom. On Thursday, Feb. 24, Ramona Disano turned in a bottle of Diazepam (Valium) that her son allegedly filled at CVS on Tuesday, Feb. 22. When Mr. Disano filled the prescription, there were 90 pills in the bottle, and when his mother returned the bottle there were only 19.5 pills remaining, according to the police report.

Patrolman Matthew Winsor questioned the pharmacy technician who was on duty when Mr. Disano picked up the medication. The technician told Winsor that she recognized Disano because he had been in the store before. Mr. Disano allegedly told the technician that he was picking up the medication for his mother. He was able to sign for the medication because it was not a narcotic, according to the police report.

Winsor contacted the woman whose name was on the prescription. He asked her if she knew Mr. Disano, and she said he was her son’s friend and he was over a few days earlier to help her pack for Florida. She said Mr. Disano must have found the prescription bottle, which had two remaining prescriptions, at her house and took it without her consent.

Disano was charged and released on personal recognizance.

Dispute over debt

Sgt. Seth Crosby and Patrolmen Michael Protano and Troy Maddocks responded to a report of a disturbance on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at about 4:30 p.m. The incident took place at Curreri Collision on Hartford Avenue. Steven M. Bailey told Maddocks that he went to the business to collect $800 that has been owed to him since May. Bailey said he transported a backhoe for the owner, Leonard Curreri, but was still owed $800 for the work.

Bailey told Maddocks that when he entered the business, he tried to collect the money from an employee, David Barone. Bailey said Barone became angry and pushed him to the floor and then punched him in the face several times while he was on the floor, according to Maddocks's report.

Maddocks spoke with Barone and two other witnesses, who had a different account of the altercation. They said Bailey entered the business and demanded the $800 from Barone. Bailey allegedly aggressively approached Barone. Barone told Bailey to leave but Bailey continued to move towards Barone. Bailey then allegedly struck Barone in the face with a closed fist. Barone, and the witnesses, told Maddocks that he defended himself by punching Bailey either one or two times in the face.

“Mr. Barone had redness and blood on his left cheek, which is consistent with being struck by Bailey’s right first,” read Maddocks’ report.

Bailey was deemed the primary aggressor. Bailey, 45, of 22 McKinley St., Johnston was arrested on a charge of simple assault or battery and disorderly conduct.

Domestic Assault Charge

Johnston Police officers responded to 181 Winsor Ave., on Thursday, Feb. 23 at about 11:30 a.m. in response to a domestic disturbance. When Patrolman Stephen R. Altomari arrived at the home he spoke with Traci Ciccone. Ciccone was bleeding profusely from a laceration on her left thumb, according to Altomari’s report. Ciccone told Altomari that her daughter’s ex-husband, Robert Rebello, and her daughter, Vanessa, had been staying with her. Shortly before 11:30 a.m. the Rebellos began arguing, according to Ciccone.  Mrs. Rebello ran into her mother’s bedroom stating that Mr. Rebello had just assaulted her. Mr. Rebello then allegedly began to confront Mrs. Rebello and Ciccone in an aggressive manner. Ciccone repeatedly asked Mr. Rebello to leave and he refused and became enraged, according to Altomari’s report.

Ciccone told Altomari that she grabbed a folding knife for self-defense and retreated to the bathroom. Mr. Rebello followed her into the bathroom, allegedly attacked Ciccone and forcibly took the knife from her and shoved her to the floor. Ciccone sustained the cut to her thumb during the struggle for the knife, according to the police report.  Mr. Rebello then fled the home with the knife in his hand. He took Ciccone’s car and Mrs. Rebello and their two children with him.

Robert Rebello, 27, of 181 Winsor Ave., Johnston, was arrested on a charge of domestic simple assault/battery and domestic  disorderly conduct. He was arraigned and released on personal recognizance and a no-contact order was issued.
