Police Log: Dec. 28, 2011 to Jan. 1, 2012

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for Dec. 28, 2011 to Jan. 1, 2012. Where an arrest is reported, it does not indicate a conviction.

Scrapping stolen goods arrest:

arrested Peter Tortorella, 41, of 100 Elliot Ave., North Providence, on a felony charge of receiving stolen goods on Dec. 30. Ptlm. Matthew Leveillee stated in his report dated Dec. 28 that a manager for F.W. Webb Company in Cranston reported that steel pipes had been stolen from the company, and then scrapped at at 23 Green Hill Road in Johnston. The manager provided Leveillee receipts with Peter Tortorella’s signature for the scrapped metal.

On Dec. 29, Detectives Thomas Dwyer and Joshua Heywood responded to Full Circle Recycling, where they obtained a witness statement and video surveillance of the transactions with Tortorella. Dwyer reported that he tried to contact Tortorella and left messages for Tortorella to contact him.

After Johnston Police issued a warrant for Tortorella's arrest, Rhode Island State Police took Tortorella into custody on the warrant on Dec. 30. Ptlmn. Adam Parkinson and Stephen Altomari took Tortorella into custody at the Lincoln State Police Barracks and transported him to Johnston Police Headquarters, according to police reports.

Tortorella was arraigned on the felony charge of receiving stolen goods, and bail was set at $25,000 with surety. Special Asst. Atty. Gen. Peter Roklan was present at the arraignment and requested that Tortorella be remanded to the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston for violating probation stemming form his May, 2011, arrest for larceny under $500. According to Det. Brian Loffredi’s report, the request was granted, and Tortorella was transported to the ACI.

Fugitive from justice:

Johnston Police assisted Raynham, MA, Police Det. William Donnelly and members of the Bristol County Drug Task Force with the arrest of Michael C. Guadagno, 40, of 28 Red Robin Road, Cranston, on a charge of being a fugitive from justice and a Raynham arrest warrant for armed home invasion.

Acording to police reports, Javier Campanaro drove Guadagno into Johnston on Dec. 30 around 3:45 p.m. Guadagno was arrested without incident and remanded to the ACI.

Campanaro, 39, of 25 Loveday St., Providence, was arrested on a charge of driving without a license. He has five previous charges of driving without a license. Campanaro paid a $50 administrative fee and was released on $5,000 personal recognizance with a court date of Jan. 11, according to Det. Brian Loffredi’s report.

DUI On Greenville Ave.:

Johnston Police arrested Michael R. Wiley, 54, of 4 Nimitz Drive, Smithfield, on a charge of DUI/drugs/alcohol, first offense, blood alcohol count unknown, and refusal to submit to a chemical test on Dec. 31. Ptlm. Michael Protano responded to a report of an accident with injuries at the intersection of Greenville Avenue and Sanderson Road. A 1993 Ford Thunderbird was off to the side of the road with “major front-end damage,” according to Protano’s report.

When Protano tried to speak with Wiley, he allegedly kept turning his back towards Protano. Wiley listened to Protano’s order to turn around and face him but was unable to answer the questions regarding how the accident happened and the direction he was originally traveling. Protano reported that he detected the odor of alcohol on Wiley’s breath.

Wiley allegedly admitted to drinking while driving, according to the police reports. Ptlm. Joseph McGinn conducted the field sobriety test, which Wiley failed. Wiley was arrested for suspicion of DUI and transported by personnel to Fatima Hospital for an injury to his lip.

Wiley allegedly admitted to “throwing two nips of Yukon Jack whiskey in the brush because he knew he was in trouble for drinking and driving,” according to Sgt. Michael Babbitt’s report. Babbitt located one of the bottles and Wiley allegedly admitted it was his, according to the police report.

Other arrests:

Johnston Police arrested Elizabeth Y. Arn, 24, of 18 Obeline Drive, North Smithfield, on a charge of assault on a person over 60 causing bodily injury and disorderly conduct on Jan. 1. Arn allegedly threw an ashtray at the victim and struck her in the back of the head. Arn was arraigned and released on $5,000 personal recognizance with a pre-arraignment conference on March 2.

Johnston Police arrested Troy A. DiPanni, 39, of 126 Greenville Ave., Johnston, on a charge of obstructing a police officer in the execution of duty on Jan. 1.

Johnston Police arrested Diane M. Calise, 50, of 282 Simmonsville Ave., Johnston, on a charge of child abuse – second degree, vandalism/malicious injury to property, and disorderly conduct on Jan. 1. Calise allegedly appeared to be highly intoxicated when officers arrived, according to the police report. Calise allegedly got into an argument with her daughter. Calise allegedly restrained her daughter and struck her in the face several times while she had her restrained, according to Ptlm. Ryan Lemieux’ report.
