Police Log: April 29 to May 5

This is a summary of reports provided to Johnston Patch by the Johnston Police Department for April 29 to May 5, 2011.

DUI Motorcycle Accident:

Patrolman Michael Protano responded to a call of a motorcycle accident at the intersection of Fountain Avenue and Simmonsville Avenue on April 29 at about 5:46 p.m.

When Protano arrived, Mario Dalmazzi told Protano he was inside of his Simmonsville Avenue home when he heard a sound similar to a motorcycle revving its engine. He went to the window and saw Peter R. Faraone’s motorcycle leaning against his vehicle. Dalmazzi stated that Faraone was lifting his motorcycle off the ground, according to the police report. Dalmazzi went outside and Faraone was allegedly getting on his motorcycle and trying to leave. Dalmazzi told Faraone not to leave because the police were on the way.

Protano wrote in his report that Faraone was sitting on the seat of his Harley Davidson Sportster when the officer arrived at the scene. Faraone lost his balance as he walked toward Protano, according to the report. Faraone allegedly denied hitting Dalmazzi’s vehicle. He said he tried to make the corner Simmonsville Avenue and Fountain Avenue when he hit a patch of sand and lost traction. Faraone said his motorcycle began to skid and he “laid his motorcycle on its side causing it to slide and come to rest next to Mr. Dalmazzi’s parked vehicle,” according to Protano’s report. There was minor damage to Dalmazzi’s rear passenger side quarter.

Protano said he smelled a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating” from Faraone’s breath as he spoke. Faraone allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol before driving his motorcycle. He consented to to a field sobriety test and a breath test. The reading from the breathalyzer was .16.
