Police Log: April 28 to May 2

This is a summary of reports provided to JohnstonPatch by the Johnston Police Department for April 28 to May 2, 2011.

Marijuana possession charges:

e Lt. Marc A. Boisvert and Capt. Robert Menard observed the driver of pick-up truck turn onto Killingly Street without using his turn signal on April 28 around 11:37 a.m. The rear of the truck contained scrap metal that was not secured and the driver was not wearing a seat belt, according to the police report.

The officers stopped the truck. As Boisvert approached the driver’s side window he “smelled a strong odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle,” read Boisvert’s report.  When he asked the driver, Michael J. Pannone, for his license, registration and proof of insurance, Pannone opened the glove box. When he opened it Menard and Boisvert saw a clear bag containing a green leafy substance, according to the report. The substance tested positive for marijuana and Pannone was placed under arrest.

On April 29, Johnston Police Patrolman Mario Mennella Jr. saw a gray Chevrolet Malibu pass by his fixed post at a high rate of speed at 1:56 a.m. Mennella pulled onto Atwood Avenue and followed the car. The driver allegedly crossed over the double yellow line after hitting the brakes to avoid the car in front of him. Mennella turned on his emergency lights to signal the driver to pull over. The driver pulled over to the side of the road, struck the curb, and went up on curb. The driver drove back onto the road and continued for another 50 feet before turning into a parking lot at 1463 Atwood Ave.

Mennella approached the car and asked the driver, Daniel J. Tetreault, for his license, registration, and proof of insurance.  “The operator had a hard time locating the vehicle information, shuffling and dropping his paperwork on the seat,” read Mennella’s report. Mennella said he could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage.  Tetreault allegedly admitted to having “a couple of beers at Applebee’s while watching the Red Sox game.”

Tetreault agreed to take the field sobriety test. He failed the walk and turn test and the one leg stand.  Tetreault then agreed to take a breath test. The reading was .186 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). Tetreault, 34, of 193 Log Road, Smithfield, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, first offense — .15 or greater BAC.
