Police Beat: Disorderly, Marijuana, Stolen Car, Stolen Copper

Recent incidents and arrests by Johnston Police.

DISMEMBERMENT THREATS
Johnston Police charged a 21-year-old Cranston man with domestic disorderly conduct and violating a no-contact order after he allegedly threatened to “hack up” and dismember a Johnston woman with whom he had a former relationship.

According to police, Joshua Michael Carey, of 19 Woodland Ave., Cranston, allegedly sent several text messages directed to the woman through a friend’s cell phone. In the messages, he threatened to “brutally murder [the woman] and dismember her body.”

Police said Carey used one of his friend’s cell phones to send the text messages and the victim was sure it was Carey because he reportedly called the same number he was texting on a restricted number and made threats similar in nature to the texts and she recognized his voice.

COPPER THEFT
Police are investigating the theft of copper wiring from external HVAC units outside a cell tower building off Peck Hill Road.

According to a police report, the crime was reported on Jan. 11 and the theft would have occurred sometime between Dec. 29 and the date the crime was reported.

The suspect reportedly left footprints in the snow leading to the building from a wooded area to the south, "however due to the snow melting they were indistinguishable." 

MARIJUANA POSSESSION
Three Providence 18-year-olds were charged with marijuana possession and underage possession of alcohol Jan. 11 after a a traffic stop during which responding officers smelled marijuana and saw a bottle of liquor on the floor in the vehicle.

According to police, Navdeep Singh, 18, of 74 King Philip St., Providence; Lily J. Granai, 18, of 18 Halsey St., Providence; and Jeremy A. Miranda, 18, of 22 Christopher St., Providence, were charged with marijuana possession and underage possession of alcohol. Miranda, who was driving, was also charged with driving while in possession of a controlled substance.

According to a police report, Ptlmn. David Galligan stopped the car after a report of a suspicious vehicle. As he walked towards the car, he saw Miranda leaning forward and reaching under his seat. 

Galligan then reported that he could smell marijuana emanating from the car. The three teenagers at first denied having any drugs in the car. They were ordered to step out of the car and a search turned up a bag of about four grams of marijuana and a bottle of Mango Jack on the floor in the back.

The three suspects continued to deny the pot was theirs. As a result, all three were charged. The vehicle, a 1994 Toyota Camry, was towed from the scene.

STOLEN CAR
Johnston Police charged Roger G. Rezendes, 22, of 575 Dyer Ave., Providence, with a felony charge of possessing a stolen vehicle after he was spotted driving a stolen car by an officer on routine patrol.

According to police, Ptlmn. Luca A. Lancellotti Jr. spotted a grey Nissan Maxima heading east on Dyerville Avenue and ran a check on the plates. He then saw the car was reported stolen out of Cranston.

Once pulled over, police found Rezendez inside the car. He was quickly taken into custody.

In addition to possessing a stolen car, police charged Rezendez with operating without a license and a warrant out of Superior Court for failing to appear for prearraignment hearing on a narcotics possession with intent to deliver charge out of Cranston. 

WARRANTS
Johnston Police charged Andrew H. Poland, 27, of 273 Greenville Ave., Johnston, with a Third Division District Court bench warrant for failing to appear on a charge of receiving stolen property on Jan. 11.

Police said they responded to Poland's address to locate him and serve the warrant and found him hiding in the basement under a stairwell.

On Jan. 12, Johnston Police charged Michael Alan Veilleux, 46, of 63 Bingley Terrace, Johnston, as a fugitive from justice and two warrants after police responded to his address for a check on two juveniles for the Department of Children Youth Services.

Police said they ran a check of Veilleux's information while at the scene and found three warrants. One was out of Swansea, Mass., for receiving a stolen motor vehicle, identity fraud and a suspended license. The other two were out of Rhode Island for failing to appear on driving with a suspended license and narcotics possession charges.

Veilleux was taken into custody without incident. He was held for extradition.

SUSPENDED
Johnston Police charged Kenneth Boccanfuso, 52, of 26 Spring St., Johnston, with driving with a suspended license and without proof of insurance Jan. 12 after he was involved in a minor motor vehicle accident on Greenville Avenue.

Police said Boccanfuso backed into a Providence woman while she was stopped on the street near the intersection of Killingly Street. There were no reported injuries.
