Man who Stabbed Himself Charged with Falsely Reporting Robbery

David Pastore of Johnston allegedly stabbed himself outside the Dollar Tree on Atwood Avenue and then called police to say he was attacked by an Hispanic man.

A 52-year-old Johnston Man was charged with falsely reporting a crime after he allegedly stabbed himself in the parking lot of a shopping plaza and then told police that he was attacked and robbed by an Hispanic man.

Police said David Pastore, of 349 Simmonsville Ave., Johnston, called police on March 30 and told them that he was attacked by an Hispanic man outside of the Deals Dollar Tree.

Police said Pastore told them that the unknown attacker had a chin strap beard and demanded Pastore to "give me your money" and then stabbed him in the left shoulder with an unknown object. The supposed attacker then drove off in a small white car with temporary plates.

Police canvassed the shopping center and collected surveillance videos from stores in the plaza in the hopes of identifying the alleged attacker.

Police said they found blood on the ground near Pastore's car and on the door. They were unable to find any witnesses at the scene.

Pastore was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he told police more details about the supposed attacker: he was about five-feet, nine inches tall and weight 160 lbs with short, brown curly hair, blue jeans, sneakers and a green button-up jacket.

The next day, police said Pastore came to police and told them that he made the whole story up and stabbed himself.

Police said Pastore said he "cut himself in the car and threw the knife in the woods," according to a report.

He was charged with fasley reporting a crime, a misdemeanor, and is due to appear in Third Division District Court to answer to the summons on April 17.
